Study finds 3 in 10 closet SDP supporter

SINGAPORE, SIN - A study published by the Chiam See Tong school of public policy revealed that 3 out of 10 people here in Singapore are secretly Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) supporters.

The findings come as the general elections loom closer, once again reminding voters that the opposition consists of more than the worker's party.

Dr. Anne Er Kee, who headed the study said the findings were surprising and shows that many people are still afraid to declare themselves as SDP supporters. "They fear being stigmatized by their friends and families, and we all know fear leads to anger, and anger leads to hate, which leads to the dark side. There's just this negative impression of the dark side."

Speaking on condition of anonymity, one such SDP supporter had this to say, "I've thought about coming out to my parents about it, but it's difficult, our conservative society just isn't ready for it yet. I know I'll do it eventually, it's just who I am, you can't just change that. I just hope they'll accept me and love me regardless."

Some dismissed the study, saying there was no need to read too much into a short-term trend. Associate professor of policy studies Louis Sanchez Tan says "Most youth here will support opposition once in a while, it's just a phase. It'll end once they read their (SDP) policy stands." Still others were alarmed by the study. "Opposition is an abomination, it's written in the constitution." commented 57 year-old Mr Lee Guan Hew. "It's Adam and Lee, not Adam and Yee."
